as i was heading out of crater lake national park i stopped to have lunch at a roadside pull out
that is when i noticed the drivers side window in my sleeping loft was broken!
while driving around the lake, at one point i heard a strange sound but couldn’t identify what it was— now i knew it was the sound of the glass breaking
fortunately only the outer pane was broken so i taped over it to keep more glass from coming loose
at that point i decided i really didn’t feel like driving an hour and a half back to the campground only to have to repeat 2/3rds those same miles in the morning— i checked to see if my fave harvest host mt shasta brewery had any spots open that night but they were full— so i decided to just stay in a rest area somewhere along the way south— i was leaving crater lake about 3:30pm and figured i would drive for 3 or 4 hours
maps told me i could arrive in redding/willows in 3/4 hours, but i have learned to cut distances in half for the same amount of time, meaning i could reasonably expect to reach weed in about 3.5 hours— so we headed south!
i was amazed at how big and beautiful klamath lake is
and i was sad to see all the burned forests along the way
i was really tempted to stay at the grass lake rest stop on highway 97 it was so pretty, but i decided it was too remote— i’m always super aware of not leaving myself vulnerable by overnighting in a place where i could be isolated
i decided to make a push to get to the rest stop at shasta lake— i have so many good memories of houseboating there each year when my kids were growing and imagined it would be a really nice rest stop
wrong!— it was cramped and super full of super noisy trucks!— by this time it was 8pm and almost sunset
i try to never drive at night because in low light or darkness i could be unable to see road hazards but i kept going all the way to just north of red bluff and stayed in the rest stop there— it’s a nice, pretty big rest stop and spread out so there is plenty of space— and grassy walking paths, all lit up, so me and finny could stretch our legs after driving for so long
