on sunday i spent the day catching up on stuff like laundry and “paperwork”— all those things you get emails or statements for that you have to follow up on— and stuff that you have to figure out what your next step is
i also decided to “splurge” with my time and make a batch of fresh tomato paste
this used to be a cherished ritual of mine when the dry farm tomatoes would come into season— i’d get a whole flat from the farmers market and spend a couple days making it up and freezing it
i loved going out into the garden and cutting branches of oregano to throw into the pot, watching the bees and the butterflies and the sunlight working their magic
the steamy, watery aroma that gradually thickened into a sweet, rich perfume— the incredible, opulent color of the finished product
applesauce was another ritual of the same soothing kind, but with a warm, cinnamony aroma and a more labor intensive preparation— hope i can make some applesauce when i get to oregon in october!
